What is a Dermatologist?

A dermatologist is a physician who specializes in the treatment of skin, hair and nail disorders. They treat everything from minor skin rashes, like hives, to chronic skin diseases, such as eczema or psoriasis. They are astute at diagnosing skin cancers including Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Malignant Melanoma. Once a diagnosis is made, effective treatment can often be provided safely and conveniantly in your dermatologist's office. Today many dermatologists are also well versed in cosmetic dermatology procedures to help improve the appearance of skin as we age.

After earning their 4-year medical degree and completing an internship, dermatologists receive three more years of training dedicated to skin, hair and nails. This training includes medical dermatology for the pediatric, general and geriatic populations, dermatologic surgery and cosmetic dermatology. Dermatologists are Board Certified through the American Board of Dermatology.

Some dermatologists improve the health and appearance of your skin with a variety of treatments including filling wrinkles, eliminating spider veins or skin discolorations, resurfacing the skin with peels and removing unwanted hair. Your dermatologist can also help you evaluate the many skin care products, procedures and claims being offered by spas and non-dermatologist practitioners.

Whether your dermatologist provides general medical care for the skin or focuses on a specialized area of medical, surgical or cosmetic dermatology, they can be your trusted partner in maintaining the health of your skin, hair and nails.
